Mountain river

Montemflumen is Latin for mountain river. Water crossing a mountain does not argue with the rock. It finds the line that already exists, and given enough time it makes that line wider. That is the closest thing we have to a description of the work: most of what we build is not a new idea, it is a channel cut through something that was already in the way.

The thing in the way, here, is language. South Korea is home to hundreds of thousands of people who work, study and pay tax in a country whose software was not written for them. A bank app, a lease, a phone contract, a university form: each one is solvable, and each one is solved separately, badly, through screenshots passed around a group chat.

The company started by building for exactly that. A community app so foreign residents could find housing, jobs and each other in one place instead of across a dozen chat groups. A marketplace so they could buy and sell in English while local sellers reached them. A consulting tool that prices Korean phone contracts in seven languages, because comparing subsidies in a language you are still learning is where people get taken advantage of. A forms tool that turns a Korean document nobody can read into a set of questions anybody can answer.

None of those were commissioned by a company that had already tried and failed. They were commissioned by people who had watched the problem up close and had no engineering team to hand it to. That is still the kind of client we do our best work for.

We stayed small on purpose. The person who designs a screen writes the query behind it and watches it in production the week after. It means we take fewer projects than we could. It also means there is nobody between you and the person who understands your product.
